Interactive Laboratory Microbiology (ILM)

● Interactive Laboratory Microbiology (ILM) is designed as a complete virtual laboratory microbiology experience for all laboratory microbiology instructors. ILM is also designed especially for new microbiology instructors—professors, laboratory instructors, technicians, demonstrators & student assistants—who are less familiar with the microbiology laboratory & perhaps even teaching their first course in laboratory microbiology. Instead of the senior microbiologist training staff over the summer months or just before their laboratory period, Interactive Laboratory Microbiology provides an online/download/USB presentation of laboratory microbiology. ILM is all instructors need in the undergraduate microbiology laboratory to learn how to practice laboratory microbiology procedures, observe & interpret observations of microbes, & understand the historical & contemporary significance of the microbes of microbiology.

Microbiology Procedures

● ILM includes (7) microbiology procedures with step-by-step animations & best practice animations together with techniques videos of microbiologists practicing their microbiology skills.

ILM integrates the American Society of Microbiology (ASM) Best Practices into the undergraduate laboratory microbiology curriculum for Biosafety Level 1 (BSL1), with Risk Group 1 (RG1) microbes, and Biosafety Level 2 (BSL2), with RG1 & Risk Group 2 (RG2) microbes. ILM suggests adjustments, such as the substitution of RG2 with RG1 microbes, to permit certain studies in Biosafety Level 1—see Clinical 1 Biosafety. ILM also includes many observations of RG2 microbes for BSL1 microbiology.

ILM Best Practice includes two Studies that are multimedia presentations of ASM Best Practices for Biosafety Level 1 and Biosafety Level 2:

Pure Culture 1 Microbiology Safety

Clinical 1 Biosafety

ILM includes further Studies of Pure Culture Techniques that integrate ASM Best Practices into step-by-step microbiology procedures:

Pure Culture 3 Operating an Autoclave
Pure Culture 5 Subculturing
Pure Culture 7 Swab/Spread/Pour Plate

Pure Culture 6 Streak Plate

ILM Pure Culture Techniques is included in both ILM Complete & ILM Abridged versions.

ILM integrates ASM Best Practices into all Sections—Pure Culture Techniques, Staining Techniques, Microscopy, Eukaryote Microbes, Microbial Physiology, Microbial Biochemistry, Bacterial Genetics, Microbial Ecology, Food & Water Microbiology & Clinical Microbiology—whenever microbes are handled.

Observations of Microbes

● ILM shows what observations to expect when microbiology techniques are accomplished successfully (or unsuccessfuly) & includes an extensive library of (8) images of microbes & eukaryote & prokaryote (9) Motility of Microbes.

ILM Search

● ILM Search allows Instructors to present advanced studies.

(10) ILM Search enables Instructors to explore beyond individual Studies & consult the whole ILM Database. For example, Instructors can explore references to Charles Darwin’s explorations of South America & his observations that are relevant to microbiology. ILM Search can collate applications of specific techniques & observations of individual microbes.

Practical Applications of Microbiology

● ILM focuses on practical applications of laboratory microbiology. What is the purpose & what can be learned from each microbiology procedure? ILM includes (14), (15) Scenic Microbiology to illustrate how laboratory microbiology answers questions of historical significance & contemporary relevance worldwide.

Interactive Laboratory Microbiology is available as ILM Complete Version, ILM Abridged Versions, or as individual ILM Subdisciplines. See ILM Pricing & Downloads.
